From Seaside in Grand Bassam to Culture in the AGNI Kingdoms

This cultural and seaside circuit will take us first to the discovery of the cultural beauties of the Agni countries.

We will discover the city of Abengourou and its Royal Palace, which has impressive architecture. It has a museum containing historical pieces that trace the history of the Agni kings and the development of the population of Abengourou. We will visit the Crama d’Abengourou which is the regional arts and crafts conservatory.
Bondoukou will welcome us with an excursion to SOKO for a visit to the sacred monkeys. Sacred monkeys who have lived with the inhabitants of the region for decades and who are buried like humans in the event of death, because according to the inhabitants of the region, they embody the souls of the ancestors. We will visit the house of Samory Touré who was a fierce resistant to the colonizers, the first hut of Bondoukou, we will also meet the weavers of Kanguélé who have a long tradition of weaving. Around thirty weavers produce magnificent traditional waistcloths every day. Visit of the magnificent 17th-century mosque of Sorobango.
 
From Bondoukou, we will take the course for Yamoussoukro via Bongouanou where we will make a stopover to contemplate the sacred catfish. It is a 200 m long river that is home to thousands of sacred catfish and which also serves as a place of pilgrimage for the inhabitants of the region. NB: the catfish can neither be caught nor eaten, because they are considered as guardian ancestors of the region, and they are revered.
 
Once in Yamoussoukro which is the political capital, we will visit Our Lady of Peace Basilica, the largest Christian religious building in the world, built between 1986 and 1989 on the model of St. Peter Basilica in Rome. It was inaugurated by Pope John Paul II in 1989; we will visit the FHB Foundation (Félix Houphouet-Boigny Foundation for peace research), created in 1973 and was at the origin of the international conference for peace, organized by UNESCO. The Crocodile Lake at the edge of the Presidential Palace shall be a must see attraction in this tour. Here, we find crocodiles that weigh up to one tone and measure almost 6 meters in length. We will meet the weavers of Bomizambo, it is a small village in the Yamoussoukro district where the art of weaving is passed down from generation to generation. This is where the traditional Baoulé waistcloths are made, which are among the most beautiful African fabrics.
 
The Domaine BINI awaits us for an extraordinary day of relaxation in an unparalleled setting. Located some 30 minutes’ drive from the city of Abidjan, the Bini domain is an ecological site that covers an area of 70 hectares. It is an ideal setting to come out from everyday stress and immerse yourself into pure nature. You can practice hiking, zip lines, take a bath of clay, swim or just relax for those who need rest. A passionate and warm professional team will take care of you during your visit. At last, daily stress will go away into nature.
 
We will then take the course for Grand Bassam. A historic town located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and former capital of Côte d’Ivoire, Grand-Bassam has an exceptional colonial heritage and the Atlantic Ocean gives it an extraordinary maritime facade with magnificent beaches that will take your breath away. Grand Bassam is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its beaches are unmissable and attract every weekend hundreds of visitors. Its national costume museum and its many craft centers will also be there.
 
The city tour of Abidjan will lead us to discover some attractions of the economic capital. We will explore the wonders of the Banco National Park, which is located in the heart of Abidjan and covers an area of approximately 3,000 ha. The Banco National Park was created in 1953 and is an example of a primary forest with rare animal and plant species. We will visit the Museum of Civilizations, it is a State museum that was created in 1942 and which has a rich and varied museum collection estimated at 15,210 authentic pieces from all regions of the Ivory Coast. The museum’s collection is made up of various categories of objects. These are statues, masks, musical instruments, archaeological pieces, attributes of power, weights to weigh gold, everyday objects, adornments, photographs, slave shackles, doors sculptures, pottery, textiles etc. These objects retrace the history of the intermingling of Ivorian cultures and populations.

Day 2: Abidjan- Abengourou (208 km)

Early wake-up, breakfast and departure from Abidjan for Abengourou. We will stop at the Azaguier crossroads to taste the exotic fruits of the region. Continuation to Abengourou. Arrival and installation at the hotel. Guided tour of the Royal Palace, the Abengourou Palace has an impressive architecture and it is equipped with a museum containing historical pieces which trace the history of the Agni kings and the evolution of the population of Abengourou. Visit of the Crama d’Abengourou which is the regional conservatory of arts and crafts in Abengourou. Evening return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Abengourou- Bondoukou

Breakfast and departure for Bondoukou. Excursion to Soko and visit to the sacred monkeys. The village of Soko is located 7 km from the city of Bondoukou and is home to monkeys that have lived with the locals for decades. In the event of death, they are buried like humans. According to the inhabitants of the region, these monkeys embody the souls of the ancestors of the region. We will visit the house of Samory Touré who was a fierce resistant to the colonizers, we will visit the first hut of Bondoukou, the weavers of Kanguélé who have a long tradition of weaving. Around thirty weavers produce magnificent traditional loincloths every day. Visit of the 17th century mosque of 

Sorobango. Evening return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Bondoukou - Yamoussoukro

Early departure for Yamoussoukro via Bongouanou where we will stop to contemplate the sacred catfish. It is a 200 m long river which is home to thousands of sacred catfish and which also serves as a place of pilgrimage for the inhabitants of the region. NB: the catfish can neither be caught nor eaten, because they are considered as guardian ancestors of the region and they are revered. Continuation of the journey through small villages and beautiful landscapes. Arrival in Yamoussoukro installation at the hotel. Free evening, dinner and night.

Day 5: Yamoussoukro and its surroundings

Breakfast and city tour of Grand Bassam. Visit of the National Costume Museum. Established in 1981, the National Costume Museum is responsible for the preservation of national collections of costumes, organization, development and all research related to Ivory Coast dress. This museum houses an important collection of traditional costumes of all the regions of Ivory Coast. It has about 786 pieces and models of traditional habitats. Day 9: Abidjan

Breakfast and visit of the city of Abidjan, you will discover the plateau, which is the business center of Abidjan with its buildings, Adjamé a large popular district and its astonishing market. Visit of the Museum of Civilizations, it is a State museum that was created in 1942 and which has a rich and varied museum collection estimated at 15,210 authentic pieces from all regions of the Ivory Coast. The museum’s collection is made up of various categories of objects. These objects retrace the history of the intermingling of Ivorian cultures and populations. Discovery of the fauna and the flora of the Banco National Park with its multiple tropical species and the famous 

FANICOS washers, (these are men who wash clothes with worn tires on the shore in Abidjan). The Banco National Park is located in the heart of Abidjan and covers an area of nearly 3,000 ha.
